The State is closer to the Equator than Rome or Chicago. The climate is a temperate maritime climate, without the extremes in temperature and rainfall of the other Australian States. Hobart's maximum summer average is 22 degrees Celsius and its winter average is 12.6 degrees Celsius. Tasmania records the inhabited world's cleanest air at Cape Grim.

The population of Tasmania is about 450,000 with approximately 170,000 living in the capital city of Hobart. It is the home of the famous Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. A wide variety of accommodation is available including 5 star deluxe world class hotels, wilderness lodges and retreats, colonial accommodation, bed and breakfast delights and quality standard motels.

Tasmanian wilderness is of such a universal value that it is included on UNESCO's World Heritage List with 30% as National Parks. They have spectacular waterfalls, massive eucalyptus forests and stunning mountain ranges. The State is noted for its fine timbers. Artists and crafts people have been inspired by Tasmania's abundance of raw materials, clear light, beauty and peaceful environment.

Geographical isolation has left Tasmania with a wonderful variety of animals. There are opportunities to view marsupial fauna in the wild - for instance Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, quolls, or platypus. The highlands of Tasmania have over 3000 wilderness lakes, a trout angler's and bushwalker's paradise.

Settled as a British penal colony in 1803, Tasmania's brutal beginnings can be re-lived through restored convict gaols, cells and Georgian cottages. Visit Port Arthur.

The clean environment, unhurried lifestyle and nature of the island has turned Tasmania into Australia's gourmet larder. The fresh wild and farmed fish, cheeses and grain fed beef are a connoisseur's delight. When combined with the well established visitor infrastructure, the beauty of Tasmania's landscapes, its friendly people and respect for its history all continue to be its major attractions.
